Community Engagement and Network Lead – Bristol

Full Time Role – 37.5hrs per week, 12 Month temporary contract,

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, well organised, community engagement worker to work within our Stop Smoking Service based in Bristol. You will be responsible for driving uptake of the service amongst specific communities and demographics.  You will empower the community to access our service by making and maintaining strong community links with organisations, groups and health professionals.  You will ensure other agencies understand the role of the service and how to access it through attending networking events, community outreach and stakeholder and partner meetings.

 key functions of the role are:

  •  Representing and promoting the Bristol stop smoking service at community events and stakeholder meetings
  • Building and maintaining relationships and referral pathways with community groups, stakeholders and health professionals
  • Mapping existing community assets, recording activities and outcomes
  • Deliver Brief Intervention training to key organisations across Bristol, raising awareness of the service and ensuring the service can reach the residents who might benefit from it
  • Contribute to the services digital assets including Facebook and website posts and articles
  • Create a quarterly digital newsletter

We would like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:

  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Possess a minimum of 1-year experience working in a community-based service.
  • Are experienced in using behaviour change models within a work context.
  • Are flexible with good time management and planning skills.
  • Are interested in motivating and supporting both individuals and groups in community-based settings.
  • Can raise public awareness and provision of consistent healthy lifestyle messaging, on issues relevant to the health of the community and in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Have experience in building strong links and relationships with a diverse range of groups, organisations and agencies.
  • Are able to talk confidently to diverse groups and individuals, maintaining key messages
  • Have experience of community outreach and engagement.

JOB DESCRIPTION

MAIN PURPOSE

Our Community Engagement and Network Leads work to build community capacity to implement our service goals through resident and cross community engagement that is participatory, inclusive, deliberative, and collaborative.

 SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The post holder will:

  • Work to participate in all community networks of relevance developing trusted partnerships
  • Develop and deliver a community action plan for the engagement of stakeholders and partners and raising awareness of services.
  • Deliver Brief Intervention training to organisations across Bristol, raising awareness of the service and ensuring the service can reach the residents who might benefit from it
  • Engage with existing organisations across the public, private and charitable sectors to embed the service
  • Specifically Increase uptake of service users in areas with the highest deprivation and those from BAME communities across Bristol
  • Support the development and delivery of the services comms and marketing strategy
  • Compose newsletters and written articles and distribute to stakeholders and partners
  • Contribute to the services digital assets including social media and the website
  • Deliver presentations to partners and stakeholders, including health professionals
  • Represent the service at events, meetings and forums to promote the service and engage with communities and partners to build strong referral pathways into the service
  • Run pop up stands at wellbeing fairs, community events and support the delivery of stop smoking campaigns to raise awareness of the service
  • Meet reporting requirements, including interpreting data and writing narrative
  • Keep accurate and timely records of all community engagement activity
  • Carry out community asset mapping and associated tasks
  • Respond to requests from organisations and partners
  • Have excellent knowledge of the service offer and be confident to communicate and present this in various forms to a variety of audiences

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Be able to plan and manage own time and activities around the needs of individuals in the community to generate referrals.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of activity to provide data and monitoring information
  • Effective numeracy and literacy skills. 
  • Emotionally sensitive and empathetic to members of the public who wish to improve their health, to be supportive and encouraging to people in difficult (sometimes frustrating) situations.
  • Value and be respectful of other people – regardless of background or circumstances.
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be flexible with good time management and planning skills
  • Be interested in motivating and supporting both individuals and groups in community-based settings, and in the home.  
  • Be an excellent communicator, able to express to other organisations and the public the benefits of health promotion and value of the service.

2. KNOWLEDGE

  • In depth knowledge of local communities in Bristol 
  • Knowledge of the harmful effects of smoking, smoking as an addiction behaviour, withdrawal and relapse.
  • Knowledge of the challenges to achieving health improvement amongst local communities.

3. EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of working with and engaging organisations, health professionals and individuals
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines to meet the changing demands of the service 
  • Experience of actively engaging with local communities
  • Experience of using Microsoft programmes (Word and Excel) 
  • Experience of team working
  • Experience of managing a personal workload or caseload  

4. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential: GCSE Maths and English to at least Grade C, or equivalent. 
  • Desirable: Recognised Health Trainer qualifications e.g. City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate for Health Trainers, or equivalent, or Royal Institute of Public Health Level 2 Understanding Health Improvement or equivalent. Registration with the NCSCT as a Stop Smoking Practitioner (or willingness to work towards this) is also desirable. If this is not held, the post holder will be supported in achieving these qualifications within the probationary period. Relevant community development qualifications.  

5. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Highly motivated self-starter with resilience, determination and the ability to see jobs through to completion.
  • Role incorporates evening / weekend working, with variable levels of travel across Bristol, working in a variety of settings including healthcare settings, the community and community centres.
  • Full UK Driving licence and access to a car for work- with ‘business purposes’ insurance.
  • Evidence of a personal commitment to continuing professional development and to maintaining an up-to-date professional knowledge supporting the development of business within the company.
  • This post involves working with vulnerable adults and as such the post holder will be required to apply for a disclosure of criminal records at an enhanced level (DBS).
